Imphal, July 25 2025:
Students of Model Higher Secondary School on Friday organised a protest by forming human chain demanding the immediate resumption of classes as the ongoing "pen down" strike by government higher secondary school lecturers continues to disrupt academic activities.
The strike, triggered by the government's failure to pay salaries to the contract teachers, has left students without classes for an extended period.
During the protest, students raised slogans such as "Pay teachers' overdue salaries immediately", "Let us study", "Teachers, teach us", "Strongly condemn the government's failure to pay teachers' salaries", and "Won't tolerate the government's delay, which causes hardship to teachers and students" .
DESAM school unit council vice-president Pukhrambam Lanchenbi said that the government recruited 603 Higher Secondary lecturers on contract basis in 2018, with the recruitment results declared on November 25, 2019 .
She stated that the teachers have faced prolonged delays in salary disbursal, leading to severe financial strain.
The crisis prompted teachers to suspend teaching duties, resulting in two separate agreements with the government.
However, despite the promises made, the agreements have not been implemented, forcing the teachers to resume their strike.
Lanchenbi urged the government to release the pending salaries without further delay and ensure that students' education is not hindered.
She said that the strike has caused serious setbacks to their studies and appealed for immediate action to resolve the issue.
