Mass tree plantation held at Langol Reserved Forest

As part of the 75th Van Mahotsav observance, Central Forest Division in association with the 14th battalion NCC, Imphal organised mass tree plantation drive at Langol Reserved Forest, Mantripukhri on Monday.
Approximately 1,000 sapling were planted by forest department officials, staff, and around 80 NCC cadets of 14th Battalion, under the guidance of Divisional Forest Officer DFO) Ganesh N.Major Rajkumar of NCC, Sadar East RFO M Jobid Meitei, and Koirengei Beat BO also participated in the programme among others.
According to a statement of the Central Forest Division, the event saw significant participation by NCC cadets, reflecting a growing dedication to environmental conservation and green initiatives.
The planted seedlings included a diverse selection of native species such as Heikru, Usoi, Wang, Tolhao, and Uyung, chosen for their ecological significance and nutritional benefits as well as to promote biodiversity and encourage cultivation of native species.
Addressing the NCC cadets, DFO Ganesh emphasised the importance of conservation and afforestation efforts for the preservation of forests and environment.
Terming forests as the lifeline of the planet, crucial for ecological balance, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, the officer underscored the urgent need for proactive conservation measures, including prevention of deforestation, combat illegal logging, and promote sustainable land-use practices.
Afforestation, the process of plant ing trees and restoring degraded lands, was also stressed as a strategy to enhance carbon sequestration, create wildlife habitats, and bolster local economies through sustainable forestry.
The officer called upon the cadets not only to support these efforts but also to lead by example in fostering a lifestyle that respects and nurtures the environment.
Key recommendations included reducing waste, conserving water and energy, advocating for sustainable practices, supporting local initiatives, and promoting environmental education.
In the concluding remarks, the DFO urged the cadets to embrace their roles as future leaders by taking proactive steps towards conservation and afforestation, emphasising that their actions today will shape the world of tomorrow, the statement added.
