Imphal, November 19 2025:
The Sector Headquarters Assam Rifles at Somsai, has been conferred a Special Mention in the category 'Best Institution (Other than School and College) Inside Campus' at the 6th National Water Awards 2024 .
Organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, the award acknowledges the garrison's integrated and sustained efforts in water conservation and environmental stewardship, said IGAR (South) in a release.
Situated in Ukhrul district of Manipur, the garrison has developed a robust rainwater harvesting system that includes 875 metres of gutter pipelines across 40 percent of its buildings and a 4.2 kilometre drainage network feeding into five artificial ponds with a combined capacity of 42.28 lakh litres.
This infrastructure has significantly reduced dependence on external water sources, especially during Ukhrul's dry season from December to May.
The initiative extends beyond engineering.
Over 1,200 personnel and families have been sensitised through regular awareness sessions on responsible water use.
In parallel, the garrison has planted 5,950 saplings in the past two years, enhancing green cover and aiding groundwater recharge.
The recognition at the National Water Awards affirms the Assam Rifles' commitment to sustainable resource management and its evolving role in fostering ecological resilience in the region, said the IGAR (South) .
