Assessment of crop damages continues

Imphal, May 10 2024:
Assessment of losses suffered by crops due to the hailstorm and heavy rain of May 5 by Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department continued Friday as a team of the Department led by its additional director Md Zakir Hussain inspected various farmlands of Imphal West district.
The team which also included Imphal West district agriculture officer Pukhrambem Premo surveyed the affected king chilli (umorok), pineapple, lemon and nursery farms at Naran Konjin Mamang Leikai, Lilong Chajing Awang Leikai, Konthoujam Mayai Leikai, Ngairangbam, Moidangpok Awang Leikai and Phayeng.
Speaking to media persons, Zakir Hussain informed that those farmers whose fields have not been visited by the department officials should take GPS tagged photo of themselves besides their damaged crops for submission to the Imphal West district agriculture officer to avail government support provided for the crop losses.
He also appealed to the farmers to join Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana scheme to receive compensation for their crops if it get damaged by natural calamity.
Meanwhile, one of the farmers, Ravi disclosed that after forming three farmer interest groups under Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA) they had planted 40,000 king chilli in their fields but due to the hailstorm on May 5 the entire crop have been damaged.
He also appealed to the government to help the farmers who had pinned hope on their crops for a decent livelihood.
