Imphal, June 02 2024:
Manipur Chemists and Druggists' Association (MCDA) has assured the public that the association will ensure adequate supply of medicines in-spite of the impact of widespread flooding caused by Cyclone Remal.
The association also urged the people to refrain from panic buying.
Addressing the media at their office in Gambhir Singh Shopping Arcade on Sunday, MCDA general secretary Thokchom Dwijamani acknowledged hardships caused to the masses by Cyclone Remal, especially breaches of banks of major rivers, resulting in marooning unprecedented number of people.
Pointing out that pharmaceutical outlets, both retail and wholesale, too have been inundated or waterlogged incurring loss of several medicines, he said MCDA is in the process of returning the unusable medicines to the companies concerned through the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists.
However, not all damaged medicines can be returned, leading to an estimated loss of around Rs 10 crore for the affected shops, the general informed.
While maintaining that despite suffering losses, MCDA cannot hike prices, Dwijamani appealed to the government for compensation to help recover some of the losses and further affirmed that the association is committed to ensuring availability of medicines and is even considering airlifting supplies if necessary.
Dwijamani urged the public not to worry or resort to panic buying, emphasising that MCDA is taking all necessary steps to maintain an adequate supply of medicines during this crisis.
