Thoubal, November 18 2024:
The five Congress MLAs are prepared to resign if it is in the best interest of the people of Manipur, declared CLP leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh to people of Khangabok and Thoubal in response to public demands for the resignation of the MLAs, including himself and MLA O Surjakumar.
A large number of people went to the residence of Ibobi and his MLA son Surjakumar, at Thoubal Athokpam Makha Leikai on Sunday evening, hoping to meet both.
Though they were not at home, Ibobi conveyed through a telephonic conversation that the five Congress MLAs are ready to tender resignation, as and when necessary, for the sake of Manipur and welfare of the people.
He also reminded that the party had already communicated this position to the media.
The former chief minister expressed disappointment over the failure of both the state and central governments to maintain law and order in Manipur.
The breakdown in governance is key factor for continuation of the crisis, he said.
The Congress had repeatedly urged chief minister N Biren Singh to seek an appointment with the Prime Minister, but to date, the chief minister has been unable to secure one.
Ibobi also said that India, with its military ranked sixth globally, has the power to quickly end the crisis in Manipur if it chooses to do so.
The opposition firmly believes the resolution lies in the hands of the central government.
If timely action had been taken by both the state and central authorities, the lives of three children and three women could have been saved.
Instead of using its security prowess to resolve the crisis, the central government allowed the law and order situation to completely collapse, which is very unfortunate, Ibobi opined.
