Imphal, May 10 2024:
Manipur University vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra has stated that the central government is in the process of rectifying the many colonial era laws, which were enacted by the British for administrative conveniences.
An awareness cum sensitisation programme on three new laws, namely, 'Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023', 'Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023' and 'Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023', was organised by the Department of Law, Manipur University at the Court Hall of the varsity on Friday.
Speaking as the chief guest, Prof Lokendra pointed out that the British rulers introduced new administrative, legal and education systems, and cultural policy to ease their administrative functions and prolong their rule in India, while reaping all possible benefits.
Most of the administrators at the time studied in esteemed colleges in London and received basic training in anthropology before coming to India.
They studied the society, legal system, religious and social structures of India to learn about the various communities and use the knowledge to their advantage to continue their grip over India.
The British came up with the 'divide and rule policy' and introduced numerous laws.
Of the many laws, the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Indian Evidence Act and Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) were most significant.
The three laws continued to be used in the present administrative system and courts of the country.
As such, the central government has been trying to rectify the colonial era laws, he reasoned, while adding that programme was organised with the aim of informing the masses about the three new laws, 'Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023', 'Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023' and 'Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam 2023', which will come into effect from July 1 .
