Imphal, June 02 2026: The National Research Centre (NRC), Manipur today felicitated Dr Ronaldo Laishram, research astrophysicist at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, for discovering the 'Loktak Protocluster' .

The event was held at Naorem Sanajaoba Public Library Hall, Canchipur.

Former Director of Manipur University's IQAC and exDean, School of Mathematical & Physical Sciences, Prof S Dorendrajit; MU Department of Life Sciences (Botany) DBT-Ramalingaswami Fellow Thangal Yumnamcha; and NRC president Thongam Ajit attended as dignitaries.

Thongam Ajit said frequent unrest in Manipur has disrupted students' education and stressed the need to guide them towards books and knowledge.

He hailed Dr Ronaldo's discovery of the 12.60-billion-year-old city of galaxies named after Loktak Lake as a proud moment that puts Manipur on the global scientific map.

Dr Ronaldo, explaining his work, said he named the protocluster after Loktak to immortalise the lake's historic significance.

He gave a presentation on the discovery, the importance of Loktak, the solar system, and career paths in astrophysics to attending students.
