World Bee Day: 'Boxes are ATMs'

Green Foundation Manipur, in collaboration with SAIPO Heikak Mapal, Vibha Vani and Lions Club of Imphal Ningol Collective, observed 'World Bee Day 2026' at Heikak Mapal Awang Leikai Community Hall today.
Speaking on the theme 'Bee Together for People and Planet-A Partnership that Sustains Us All', Green Foundation Manipur CEO Urikhimbam Himmat said every household in Manipur can earn substantial income through beekeeping.
"A single bee box is like an ATM booth.
With 4-5 boxes, a family can easily earn Rs 1 lakh to 2 lakh a yea?", he said.
Himmat noted that bees play a vital role in pollination, agriculture, & the environment.
World Bee Day marks the birth anniversary of Slovenian pioneer Anton Jansa and aims to spread awareness of bees' benefits, he said.
He warned that declining bee populations threaten food security, as bees are the best pollinators and crucial for crop yields and ecosystem health.
He added that scientific beekeeping has three seasons in Manipur, and with proper training and technology, farmers can increase honey production and income while improving the environment.
Khundrakpam ACMLA Th Lokeshwar, who attended as chief guest, said bees are inseparable from human society.
"They pollinate flowers and ensure crops bear fruit.
We must learn unity, discipline, and hard work from bees", he said.
Beekeeping specialist Thongam Shamungou spoke on 'Technical Details of Beekeeping', noting that beekeeping suits Manipur's conditions and can help families five comfortably.
Uyumpok GP Chairperson Thangjam Inaocha and Village Development Committee Heikak Mapal Awang Leikai president Laishram Dwijamani also attended.
Several successful beneficiaries shared their experiences at the event.
