Tributes paid to Chirai Thangal, General Thangal

The Patriots' Day commemoration, "Remember and Honour", organised by the Thangal Union together with the United Naga Council (UNC), was held at the General Thangal Ecological Park, Mayangkhang, in Kangpokpi district, on Wednesday.
As chief guest of the commemorative event, MLA Dinganglung Gangmei, who is also chairman of Hill Areas Committee (HAC), commended the organisers for holding such a programme, which helps preserve the values and culture of past glories.
He stated that, like developed societies, the present society should also share its history and past achievements with contemporary generations.
Gangmei highlighted that General Thangal resisted the white supremacy and colonial rule.

UNC president Ng Lorho, in his address as the guest of honour, said that commemorating Patriots' Day was a proud moment, as General Thangal was a Naga son who sacrificed his life for his people.
H Kuba Peter, president of the Naga People's Organisation, Senapati, also speaking as a guest of honour, urged the Manipur government to allocate a yearly budget for the grand celebration of Patriots' Day.
The highlights of celebration included dignitaries, various tribe leaders, religious leaders and others laying wreaths at the statues of Chirai Thangal and General Thangal.
The M Ningthoupham Youth performed a traditional gun salute, while Rev Cheijinba Rakhangmi, executive secretary of the Thangal Naga Baptist Association, led a solemn silent prayer in honour of the martyrs.
