Chandel youths respond to save Chakpi river positively

Chandel, May 11 2014 : In a bit to make Chakpi River a source of potable water free from pollution, hundreds of youths residing in the district headquarters of Chandel district on May 10 carried out a voluntary cleanliness drive under the initiative of Maha Area Baptist Youth fellowship (MABYF) on May 10 .

The cleanliness drive covered a stretch of about one kilometre starting from near Mantri Pantha to Koinonia School in Hnahringkhu village.

Garbage and other waste materials dumped into the river were collected and disposed off at proper places so as to keep the water free from pollution.

After the cleanliness drive, the youths also took out a rally to spread public awareness on the importance of keeping Chakpi River, which is one of the main sources of water not only for household use but also for agricultural purposes of the people in the district.

The rally began from Hnahringkhu village via Japhou Bazar and proceeded towards the public garbage dumping centre located near the district forest office, Chandel where all waste material were disposed off.

During the rally, placards inscribed with wordings like 'Chakpi River Is Our Life.

Treat It Well', "Let Chakpi River Flow In Peace', 'Don't be Selfish, Think For Generation' were seen holding by the participating youths.

The cleanliness drive carried out and the awareness rally taken out gained significance in the light of the fact that though regarded as the very soul of the people of Chandel district, Chakpi River has almost becoming a dumping ground thereby rendering its water unfit for human consumption today.

Besides dumping of kitchen wastes by people residing along the embankment of the river, at some areas even latrine outlets could be seen flowing directly into the river, thus, raising concern over possible health hazards and spread of water borne diseases from using the same water.

In the wake of Chandel town and its surrounding villages hit by acute lack of potable water, Maha Area Baptist Youth fellowship (MABYF) took up the initiative of involving the youths to save Chakpi river and spread public awareness on its importance.
