Imphal, March 11 2026: A four-day workshop on the "Folk and Tribal Arts of Manipur" began today at the Shri Shri Govindaji Nrityashala Hall, Government Dance College, Palace Compound.

The event is a collaborative effort between the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, Kolkata (Ministry of Culture, Government of India) and the Government Dance College (Department of Art & Culture, Government of Manipur) .

The inaugural function was graced by M Joy Singh, former Commissioner (Art & Culture), Manipur; and L Kishworjit Singh, former Director (Art & Culture), Manipur, as the chief guest & president respectively.

Workshop on 'Folk & Tribal Arts of Manipur" kicks off

The workshop features multiple sessions dedicated to exploring various traditional art forms of the region.

The first session included insightful talks by Victor Vashi from Mapao Zingsho Village on "Tangkhul Dance" and Ngaopuni from Senapati District on "Paomei Dance" .

The second session highlighted more diverse cultural expressions, with Padma Shri Guru Rewben Mashangva speaking on "Tangkhul Music", retired Guru JNMDA Poiruna Golmei discussing "Kabui Dance", and Dr L Subhadra Devi, Assistant Professor at Manipur University, presenting on "Meitei Folk Music" .

Demonstrations were also part of this enriching session.
