State joins World Mental Health Day observance

Imphal, October 10 2013 : As in other parts of the globe, World Mental Day was observed in different parts of Manipur today.

The State Health Department joined hands with the Manipur State Mental Health Authority and the Department of Psychiatry, JNIMS in observing the 21st World Mental Health Day under the theme "Mental health and older adults" at G..MHall here.

Gracing the occasion were Minister of Health and Family Welfare, GAD and CADA Phungzathang Tonsing as Chief Guest and Director Health Services Dr.Asem Bijoy Singh as President.

Gyaneshwar Sharma, Head Of Department, Psychiatry JNIMS and Prof..MAkshaykumar Singh, retired HOD Clinical Psychology, RIMS were also present on the occasion as Guests of Honour.

Spaking on the occasion, Minister Phungzathang speaking said, "Parents are a form of God whom we can see with our naked eyes.

We should help old parents who are mentally unsound and try to maintain our responsibility of easing their pain.

We should not forget that we, young people will also suffer mentally when we get old and would not like it if our children treat us coldly" .

Professor Gyaneshwar stated that with the improvement of medical sciences and research conducted in the field of mental health treatment, scientists have been successful in producing various kinds of effective treatments, as a result of which nowadays, a person suffers from mental problems at a later age compared to the past.

Owing to the improvement of treatment and longevity of lifespan, the Central Government has also extended the retiring age by a couple of years. The World Mental Day observance was also held under the joint aegis of Indian Psychiatrics Society, Manipur State Branch and Department of Psychiatry, RIMS at the Jubilee Hall of RIMS.

The event was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Rishang Keishing as Chief Guest, President of Indian Psychiatrics Soiety, Manipur State Branch Dr L Surchandra as Functional President and Parliamentary Secretary M Prithviraj and Programme Head of AIR Imphal M Kanankumar as Guests of Honour.

Secretary of World Mental Day Organising Committee Dr RK Lenin and Chairman of the Committee Dr N Heramani were also present on the dais.

At Chandel district hospital, World Mental Health Day was observed with Deputy Commissioner of the district Th.Chittaranjan Singh, I.A.S, as Chief Guest today.

The observance function organized by Chandel District Mental Health Society on the theme of "Mental Health with Older Adults', was also attended by Chairman of the District Hospital Management Committee Kobor Hrangbung as Functional President and Chief Medical Officer Chandel S Ibomcha Singh and Dr Lakhsmi as Guests of Honour.
