ICAR RC for NEH, Manipur Centre celebrates 51st Foundation Day

Imphal, January 09 2026: The 51st Foundation Day of the ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hills (NEH) Region, Manipur Centre, was celebrated at its Lamphelpat campus on Friday.

The celebration was graced by dignitaries, including T Phulen Meitei, Director, Department of Fisheries, Government of Manipur; Dr K Nandini Devi, Dean, College of Agriculture, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal; and Dr Kh Rishikanta Singh, Head of Regional Centre (i/c), ICAR Manipur Centre, Imphal.

Speaking on the occasion, Phulen Meitei said that the integration of mechanization and the use of hybridized crop varieties have significantly contributed to making intensive farming systems like triple cropping more feasible and achievable for farmers.

He also advised agricultural organisations to promote a work culture centered on maximizing land use and implementing a triple cropping system in irrigated areas to boost productivity and farmers' income.

He pointed out that a successful transition to a triple cropping system requires a supportive work culture that encourages efficiency, cooperation, and the adoption of modem agricultural practices.

The Director asserted that Manipur has vast untapped potential for fish farming, with over 56,000 hectares of suitable water bodies, yet only about a third is currently utilized, leading to significant fish deficits met by imports despite potential self-sufficiency and surplus for neighboring States.

"By addressing various constraints and judiciously exploring the untapped potential using modem & sustainable technologies, Manipur can not only meet its local demand but also create a surplus for export, significantly improving the economic well-being of its fisherfolk and the State's overall economy", added Phulen Meitei.

Furthermore, Phulen Meitei announced that the Government is working on initiatives to develop more areas for aquaculture and improve fish production, as fish is a critical part of the local diet and culture.

As part of the event, inputs were also distributed to the farmers.
