Imphal, July 22 2024:
Hmar Inpui, Assam Hills Region, along with its affiliated bodies, submitted an appeal letter to the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), Assam, condemning alleged "extrajudicial killings" of three Hmar youths and urged for an independent enquiry.
In the appeal letter, Hmar Inpui vehemently condemned these acts by the police, highlighting the discrepancy between the police's civilised reputation and the brutal actions witnessed.
The three youths were arrested from an autorickshaw during a routine police check.
Viral videos show the three youths remaining calm despite a police officer shouting "Pistol, Pistol" while frisking their belongings, contrary to the police's version of events.
The police claimed that the three youths were arrested on July 16, 2024, around 4:30 pm at Krishnapur Road and were being interrogated.
However, the same youths were later reported dead in a supposed police encounter, the letter stated.
Hmar Inpui's letter detailed the inconsistencies in the police's narrative, supported by video evidences on social media.
Photos of the deceased after the alleged killings show marks of police brutality, further contradicting the police's account.
The letter questioned the treatment of the deceased, calling it a violation of human dignity and criticising the abysmal condition in which their bodies were kept at the hospital.
The appeal underscored the constitutional right to a free and fair trial, citing Article 14 Para 2 of the Indian Constitution, which presumes innocence until proven guilty in a court of law.
The letter also questioned how the police could bypass this principle and act with such inhumanity.
Demanding an independent, unbiased inquiry and thorough investigation into the extrajudicial killings, Hmar Inpui also called for taking stringent action against the personnel involved and giving adequate compensation to the victims' next of kin.
Hmar Inpui also urged all levels of authorities to uphold the sanctity of judicial system and safeguard the freedom and rights granted by the Constitution.
