Imphal, November 18 2024: Assam Police have reportedly discovered the sixth body of the victims related to the recent abduction in Jiribam district.

According to a report by The Assam Tribune, the body of a woman was found floating in the Barak River at Singerbond in Lakhipur area of Assam's Cachar district on Monday.

Cachar SP Mahatta confirmed that the deceased is believed to be one of the six individuals abducted during a coordinated attack on November 11 in the Borobekra sub-division of Jiribam.

SP Mahatta told The Assam Tribune that the investigation into the final fate of all six victims is still ongoing.

"We are in constant touch with the Manipur Police regarding the ongoing developments," Mahatta said, indicating cooperation between Assam and Manipur authorities.

Meanwhile, a PTI report revealed that the post-mortem examination of five bodies has already been completed at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) in Assam.

The report cited sources informing that the recovered bodies matched descriptions of the six individuals who were abducted by Kuki militants from near a relief camp in Jiribam after a gunfight on November 11 between security forces and Kuki-Zo militants.

The encounter left 10 insurgents dead.

Among those abducted were three women and three children, all belonging to the Meetei community.

The victims were taken hostage by Kuki-Zo militants from a relief camp in the Borobekra area of Jiribam.

Two bodies, including those of a woman and a minor, were found on Sunday near Jirighat.

This followed the discovery of three bodies near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on November 15 .

A source familiar with the development stated, "The post-mortem examination of all five bodies has been done at SMCH.

The doctors concerned are in the process of preparing the report" .

The source added that Manipur Police would handle the arrangements for transporting the bodies back to Manipur for their final handover to the families, though the exact timeline remains unclear, the PTI report said.

Meanwhile, the discovery of a woman's body in Lakhipur area on Monday has brought the total number of bodies recovered to six.
