Thoubal, December 17 2025:
As part of a nationwide protest, the District Congress Committee (DCC), Thoubal on Wednesday staged a demonstration at Thoubal Athokpam opposing the Centre's move to rename the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(MGNREGA).
The protest was led by DCC general secretary Yumnam Basanta and witnessed participation from several members of the DCC.
The demonstrators expressed strong objection to the proposed renaming of MGNREGA as the "Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Grameen)" (VB-G RAM-G) .
Speaking to media persons, DCC general secretary Yumnam Basanta said that MGNREGA scheme, which guarantees 100 days of wage employment to rural households, was launched in the name of Mahatma Gandhi, who played a pivotal role in shaping a self-reliant India.
He said Mahatma Gandhi is a globally respected icon and the Father of the Nation, and any move to remove his name from such a landmark welfare scheme is unacceptable.
Terming the move as an attempt to undermine the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, he said such actions could lead to chaos and dissatisfaction among the masses.
Basanta added that the protest held today was the first step in demanding the withdrawal of the proposed bill.
He warned that if the Centre fails to withdraw it, the Congress party would intensify its agitation on Dec 28, coinciding with the party's Foundation Day, by launching protests across every nook and comer of the nation.
