Thoubal, May 16 2026: Vendors of Thoubal Keithel staged a sit-inprotest in front of Thoubal Municipal Council (TMC) gate against the opening of a Vishal Mega Mart store close to the marketplace, opposite Thoubal Police Station.

The traders and vendors of Thoubal Keithel have opposed the opening of the store in close proximity to the market citing that it will adversely impact the their business and livelihood.

Today's sit-in protest follows the agitation launched yesterday wherein traders and vendors suspended business activities in Thoubal Keithel and locked the TMC office.

According to a market vendor by the name of Irom Subhasini, the traders of Thoubal Keithel expected the officials of TMC to reach out to them after locking the office since yesterday.

But none of the TMC staff can be located, they all have gone into hiding, she claimed.

Questioning why the Thoubal Municipal Council issued a shop license before the construction of the Vishal Mega Mart store was complete, she called for revocation of the license.

Further, she warned that more intense forms of protest will be initiated if the Council does not resolve the issue within five days.

Yesterday, the vendors had stormed the Thoubal Deputy Commissioner's office and spoke to the DC and later locked the TMC office.
