Imphal, May 15 2026: Residents of several villages in Imphal East and Imphal West staged sit-in protests on Friday, demanding an end to killings and the withdrawal of Indian security forces, alleging failure to protect civilian lives.

At around 1 pm, clubs and meira paibis from Sawombung Kabui Khunjao, Sawombung, Thongkhong, Jorbung Nungoi, Itam Nungoi, Phaknung Awang Leikai and Duigaipangjan held a sit-in at Sawombung Kabui Khunjao Keithel.

Earlier, at about 11:30 am, another sit-in was organised at Sangaiprou Kabui Khun and Sangaiprou New Tribal Colony.

Members of the Chiru, Koireng, Rongmei, Kom and Chothe communities took part.

Sit-ins demand removal of Central forces

Speaking to the media, protesters said Manipur is going through an "unbearable phase of life" and warned that if the Government cannot protect the State, the people will defend it themselves.

They demanded an immediate halt to what they called a "proxy war" and the killing of civilians, and sought the removal of Indian security forces who, they alleged, have failed to safeguard lives and property.

Slogans and placards called for armed terrorists killing civilians to be stopped immediately and for "State terrorism" to end.

Protesters said people are being forced to live in fear on unsafe roads and cannot tolerate it any longer.

They said the sit-ins signal that if the Government does not ensure a secure life and if killings continue, villages will launch a stronger, united agitation with the people of Manipur.

They appealed to residents in every comer of the State to organise similar sit-ins in their localities to prepare for a collective movement.
