Imphal, April 01 2026:
The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) Manipur State Committee marked "Black Day" today, protesting the Central Government's notification of four labour codes nationwide.
Joining a countrywide call from trade unions, federations, and associations, demonstrators gathered at Irawat Bhavan in Imphal to denounce the codes.
Unions slammed the reforms as favoring "ease of doing business" for employers by stripping worker protections and bypassing consultations.
Protesters warned the changes evoke British colonial-era exploitation, undermining historic gains like job security, union formation, collective bargaining, strike rights, and fair wages - enshrined since the Trade Union Act of 1926 .
Critics highlighted curbs on union registration and lighter penalties for employer violations.
AITUC Manipur general secretary L Sotinkumar, flanked by district secretaries and officials, led the event and pledged sustained resistance to safeguard workers' rights and existing labour laws.
