National seminar on customary laws and human rights begins at DBC Maram

Senapati, July 30 2026: A two-day National Seminar on "Customary Laws, Legal Pluralism and Human Rights: Historical and Contemporary Perspectives on Women and Children" began at Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram, on Thursday.

The seminar is being jointly organised by the Department of History, Don Bosco College (Autonomous), Maram, and the District Child Protection Unit, Senapati, under the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur.

The seminar aims to examine the relationship between customary laws, constitutional values and human rights, with particular focus on the rights and protection of women and children.

Addressing the gathering, Public Prosecutor Koshia Mao stressed the need to harmonise customary laws with constitutional principles of equality, dignity and justice.

While acknowledging the important role of customary institutions in preserving indigenous identity and cultural traditions, she called for greater protection of the rights of women and children through meaningful dialogue and inclusive legal reforms.
