Imphal, May 10 2024:
The district of Kamjong, with a population of about 53,716 and an area of 2314 square kilometres divided into four blocks, has only one CHC, two PHCs, and 19 sub-centres.
However, all of these health centres have extremely limited human resources and essentially no facilities or infrastructure.
The CHC Kamjong is also run by only four doctors, one nurse, and one ANM, with no lab technician/microsco-pist, ophthalmic assistant, or dental surgeon.
People in Kamjong who are unable to travel to Ukhrul/Imphal or other tertiary hospitals for treatment, even if they have a health card (PM-JAY/CMHT), cannot afford transportation (cost Rs 7000 to 10000), hotel, food, etc.
So, to alleviate their suffering, CMO Kamjong Dr Lucy Duidang collaborated with the All Tangkhul Medicos Association (ATMA) to hold a two-day free surgical camp.
So far, 45 minor surgeries have been registered, including lipoma, cystic swelling, ganglion, corn, chalazion eye, keloid, circumcision, and four major surgeries, one total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH), two appendices, and one ovarian cystectomy.
Along with the surgical camp, ABHA IDs are being created for all patients who underwent surgeries.
In this connection, CMO Kamjong team thanked the ATMA team members led by its president Dr Wormi Sharon, assistant professor surgery JNIMS, for bearing their own travel expenses and providing surgical equipment and suture materials.
Also, the District Health Society thanked DC Kamjong Rangnamei Rang Peter for his constant support, financially, and also always encouraging the District Health Department in all its activities and programmes.
The two-day surgical camp began with a prayer from Rev Shimreipam Phungshok, pastor of Kamjong Baptist Church.
Despite becoming a district headquarters, the hospital remains at the CHC level.
The CMO appealed for upgrade to a full-fledged district hospital.
