'Shanghallasi Manipur' campaign launched to restore deforested hills

Imphal, June 01 2026: The Manipuri Students' Federation (MSF) and Central Forest Division (CFD), Forest Department, Manipur jointly flagged off the 'Shanghallasi Manipur' campaign today from Comet School, Changangei.

The initiative, themed "Let us purify the hills that save the lives of living beings", aims to restore barren hill ranges at Heibokching as part of a drive for environmental protection.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Comet School principal, Th Devchandra; Range Forest Officer of Sadar West Range, Kiranjit Yumnam; MSF president Hijam Roshan, and others.

Speaking on the occasion, Hijam Roshan said the environment sustains human life and must be preserved rather than destroyed.

He recalled how elders once nurtured trees with care, and noted that despite provisions under the Indian Forest Act to protect forest areas, illegal deforestation continues unabated.

He also expressed concern that drug abuse among youth is damaging the future of society.

Roshan added that MSF has taken up the 'Shanghallasi Manipur' campaign to revive degraded forest areas.

The drive seeks to spread awareness on the benefits of the environment, its role in sustaining life, and the collective responsibility to protect it, he said.
