In remembrance of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, the 78th Martyrs' Day was solemnly observed on Friday at Wangbal Congress Bhavan with a sit-in protest organised as part of the nationwide MGNREGA Bachao Sangram by the Khangabok Block Congress Committee.
As part of the observance, the presidents and secretaries of the Thoubal District and Khangabok Block Congress Committee, along with leaders of Mahila Committees and party members, paid floral tributes to the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi as a mark of respect.
During the sit-in protest, placards bearing slogans such as "We condemn BJP Government," "Renaming of MGNREGA is against Mahatma Gandhi," "Don't undermine the rights of the Poor," "We condemn abolishing MGNREGA," "The Act of RSS is against the Nation," etc, were displayed.
Thoubal District Congress Committee president N Lukhoi, while taking part in the protest, said that Mahatma Gandhi played a pivotal role in India's freedom struggle, dedicating his life selflessly for the welfare of the people.
Known as Bapuji and revered as the Father of the Nation, he was assassinated by an RSS member on this day, he said.
He added that the observance was organised to honour Mahatma Gandhi's legacy and contributions to the nation, and to inspire the people of India and Manipur to awaken, unite and rise by upholding his ideals of truth and non-violence.
