Jiribam, December 29 2025:
Demanding the immediate restoration of suspended passenger train services and the introduction of new rail connectivity, the World Meitei Council (WMC), Jiribam, along with various student organisations, staged a sit-in protest at Jiribam Railway Station, Babupara, today.
The protesters demanded the resumption of passenger train services from Agartala to Khongsang and from Jiribam to Silchar, besides the introduction of a passenger train service between Jiribam and Guwahati.
They also expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of the authorities to initiate action on earlier memorandum submitted to the Governor, the former Chief Minister during his tenure, MPs from Manipur, and the Union Railway Minister regarding the restoration of services.
During the sit-in demonstration, participants raised placards with slogans such as "Introduce New Line Between Jiribam to Guwahati", "Upgrade Jiribam Railway Station to a National Level," "Resume Passenger Train Services and Complete Jiribam to Imphal Railway Line" .
Speaking to the media, WMC vice-president Konjengbam Ratan Singh said the agitation was organised in response to authorities' continued failure to address repeated demands by the public and various organisations to restore regular passenger train services from Jiribam.
Another protestor, Memcha Khaidem, said that despite high expectations following the introduction of the railway line, the discontinuation of passenger train services has created serious communication gaps.
She urged authorities to immediately resume train services for the benefit of the people.
