MUWWA observes 86th Nupi Lan Memorial Day

The Manipur University Working Women's Association (MUWWA) observed the 86th Nupi Lan Ningsing Numit at the Women's Facility Centre, MU on December 15.The programme was attended by Professor N Lokendra Singh, Vice-Chancellor, MU as the chief guest; Professor Sumitra Phanjoubam, Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, MU, as the guest of honour; and Professor Memcha Loitongbam, president of MUWWA and Dean, School of Social Sciences as the functional president.
Speaking on the occasion, VC Professor N Lokendra highlighted the historic role of Manipuri women as peace-builders and mediators.
He described MUWWA as a "conscience keeper" of the university campus and acknowledged the remarkable presence of women in both administrative and academic leadership roles at Manipur University.
He noted that women constitute nearly 51 per cent of the student population and also underscored the role of women in Meitei mythological epics and literary works such as Numit Kappa.
Professor Sumitra Phanjoubam expressed her deep respect and gratitude to the women who sacrificed and fought against British repressive laws and oppression.
She remarked that Nupi Lan reminds society of the power of collective women's voices in shaping history and serving as a guiding force for future generations.
She also emphasised the importance of self-care among women, including attention to mental and physical health, to better serve society.
In her presidential address, Professor Memcha Loitongbam highlighted the significance of Nupi Lan in Manipuri society and its enduring relevance in contemporary times.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr K Sobita Devi, general secretary, MUWWA.
The event was compered by Professor Toijam Tampha Devi, Department of Manipuri.
Members of MUWWA, female research scholars, and students attended the event.
