Imphal, June 12 2025:
Protests demanding the unconditional release of Arambai, Tenggol leader Ashem Kanan were held in various parts of the state on Thursday, with sit-in demonstrations and rallies reported from several locations in Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts.
In Imphal West, members of Kwakeithel Apunba Nupi Lup, Ghari Apunba Nupi Lup and Hiyangthang Narankonjil Meira Paibi Lup jointly staged a sit-in protest at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai community hall.
Interacting with the media, Ghari Makha Leikai Meira Paibi president Huirem Saroja said the people cannot accept any government policy aimed at targeting Arambai Tenggol members one by one to divert attention from the real issues plaguing the state.
Saroja asserted that AT members were compelled to take up arms after Kuki groups launched attacks on the Meetei community and the government forces failed to fulfil their responsibility to protect public lives and properties.
She said that Arambai Tenggol laid down arms following the Governor's appeal and has since returned to normal life, assisting people in distress, including those affected by the recent flood.
She warned that if the government continues to target AT members, the mothers will not remain silent and asked the Governor to arrest the mothers too.
She further alleged that the crackdown on AT is a ploy to deflect attention from the root cause of the conflict.
While the government continues to arrest AT members, there has been no report of Kuki militants surrendering weapons nor has any action been initiated against them, she added.
In another protest, Sagolband Lukram Leirak Meira Paibi Lup staged a sit-in at Lukram Leirak community hall.
A protestor said AT members are not criminals and blamed the government for failing to shield the people, which forced the youth to take up arms.
She demanded the unconditional release of Ashem Kanan and warned that the protest will continue until he is freed.
Urup Arapati Apunba Meira Paibi Lup and UDACO jointly organised a protest rally demanding the release of Ashem Kanan and a halt to the alleged targeting of AT members.
The rally commenced from Arapati Mayai Leikai Kangjeibung and proceeded through Lilong to Yangbi Thong.
Chingamakha Model Club and Apunba Meira Paibi Lup 12 Chingamakha also jointly staged a sit-in protest at Irom community hall.
Protestors expressed anger over the political leadership in the state, blaming elected representatives for prioritising power over public welfare.
They demanded that all MLAs resign from their posts and also condemned the Governor, holding him responsible for the prevailing situation.
