One-day sensitization programme on Sangai Day held at Nambol

Nambol, February 09 2026:
A one-day school students sensitization programme in connection with Sangai Day was successfully organised by the Sangai First Foundation (SFF), Manipur, at Special Regular English School, Nambol Sabal Leikai, Bishnupur district, on Monday.
The programme was graced by L Birmangal Singh, IFS, Director, Manipur Zoological Garden, Iroishemba; Dr Khangembam Shamungou, president Sangai First Foundation, Manipur; K Jugeshor, vice-president SFF, Manipur; and K Sanjit, viceprincipal, Special Regular English School, Nambol, as presidium members.
Addressing the gathering, L Biramangol Singh, lauded the sustained efforts of the Sangai First Foundation in conducting awareness programmes among students across the state.
He highlighted the current status of the endangered Sangai and emphasized the urgent need to protect its fragile natural habitat, the Keibul Lamjao Floating National Park.
K Jugeshor shared his observations on the present population status of the Sangai and presented a poignant account of its decline over the past few years.
Dr Khangembam Shamungou delivered an informative session on the physical features and anatomical characteristics of Sangai, while also explaining its ecological and conservation significance.
A spot quiz competition was conducted during the programme, witnessing enthusiastic participation from 83 students.
Out of them, 17 meritorious students were declared winners and will be facilitated during the Sangai Day celebration scheduled on December 10, 2026 .
On the occasion, a set of 13 books authored by Dr Khangembam Shamungou was donated to the school library.
The programme concluded with a pledge for the conservation of Sangai and environmental protection, administered by Budha Khwairakpam, secretary, SFF .
