Imphal, February 04 2026:
A Joint Committee formed by three local organisations has issued a public appeal today, urging the Meitei community to strictly follow traditional customs during wedding ceremonies and avoid modern, uncustomary practices.
The committee comprises the All Manipur Ethnical Socio Cultural Organisation (AMESCO), the All Manipur Art and Culture Students' Union (AMACSU), and the Manipur Nat Kanba Lup (MNKL) .
During a press conference held at the AMESCO office in Konjeng Hajari Leikai, media coordinator Deepu Wangkhem stated that globalisation has introduced practices that challenge the cultural identity of the Meitei community.
These new practices not only impact the economy but also pose a significant threat to the community's traditional identity and customs, he added.
Wangkhem urged people to simplify celebrations, skipping fireworks, music, and cakecutting on Heijingpot day.
He also requested avoiding Thabal Chongba on weddings, toning down decorations, and ditching gold in traditional kundo pareng.
The Joint Committee has called upon local clubs, youth clubs, Meira Paibi, and Civil Society Organisations to help preserve the traditional norms.
The Joint Committee also distributed pamphlets regarding this matter at Khwairamband Keithel today and plans to continue public awareness activities.
