Imphal, May 03 2026:
The Safai Karmachari Sangh Manipur (SKSM) today accused the State Government of failing labour welfare and demanded the Labour Department clarify why wage hikes and worker benefits remain unimplemented.
In a press release, SKSM asked why wage increases under the Labour Codes from 2019 and 2021 have not reached workers on the ground.
The union alleged the Minimum Wages Act, 1948 and the Payment of Bonus Act are not being enforced for sweeper staff and local authority workers, especially in the Imphal Municipal Corporation.
SKSM said the Government often announces new regulations and "New Year gifts" but labourers still face financial hardship and legal uncertainty.
"If the Labour Department cannot give clear answers on public domain issues, it raises serious doubts about their intent to protect the working class", the statement said.
The union demanded the Labour Department release a public clarification on pending notifications and benefits.
It warned of further action if no satisfactory response comes through the media immediately.
