Manipur University holds Research Scholars' Meet, stresses on stronger research culture

Imphal, September 02 2026: Manipur University organised the Research Scholars' Meet 2026 at its auditorium on Wednesday under the theme "Strengthening Research Culture for Academic Excellence".

The programme was organised by the Research Club.

Manipur University in collaboration with MUSU 2025-26.Prof RK Hemakumar Singh, Vice-Chancellor (in-charge), Manipur University attended as chief guest while MUSU president Nongpoknganba Yambem presided over the function.

Dean of Students' Welfare Prof Ch Ibohal Singh, Dean of Human and Environmental Science and editor in-chief of Research Update Prof MC Arunkumar and Director of Research & Development Cell Prof Angom Dilip Kumar Singh attended as guests of honour.

A major highlight of the meet was the launch of Research Update, the research journal of Manipur University.

Altogether 18 scholars who were awarded PhD, 22 awardees, four achievers and eight contributors to Research Update were felicitated.

In his address, Prof RK Hemakumar Singh said the quality of an institution depends on the quality of students it admits and the academic output it produces.

Comparing admission to an "inlet" and academic achievement to an "outlet", he said attracting good students and nurturing them in a strong academic environment will determine the reputation of the University.

He stressed merit and transparency in admissions, especially at a time when the State is facing unrest, and expressed concern over the relatively small number of JRF and NET-qualified scholars joining the University.

He said good research requires time, enabling environment, sustained effort and dedication from scholars and supervisors.

He also called for greater collaborative research and said research should contribute meaningfully to society, not just end with a degree or publication.

Prof MC Arunkumar recalled that the Research Club was started in 1990-91 by Sahitya Akademi awardee Yumlembam Ibomcha Singh and others to promote intellectual interaction among researchers.

He urged present scholars to preserve the spirit and strengthen academic discussion.

Prof Angom Dilip Kumar Singh spoke on the changing structure of PG education under NEP 2020 and stressed strengthening project-based research in the fourth semester.

He also underlined research ethics and academic integrity.

Prof Ch Ibohal Singh highlighted the role of research scholars in strengthening the academic standing of the University and underlined the need for a multidisciplinary approach.

Earlier, Research Scholar Representative Chingkheihunba Haobam delivered the welcome and keynote address.

Moirangthem David Singh, Research Scholar, PESS, proposed the vote of thanks.

The programme also featured a Thang-Ta performance.
