Khelo India plans centre of excellence at SSI

Imphal, May 31 2026: In a major push to strengthen grassroots sports in Manipur, Lt Col Kabilan Sai Ashok, Executive Director, Khelo India, held detailed discussions with Col A Rajiv, Principal, Sainik School Imphal, on proposed sports infrastructure projects at the school campus.

As per a release issued by SSI, the meeting focused on upgrading the school's existing facilities into a Khelo India Centre of Excellence.

The proposed centre will have advanced coaching, modern equipment for identified disciplines, and support for new sports initiatives.

Lt Col Kabilan said the projects would boost motivation, discipline, and sportsmanship among cadets and help build a strong sporting ecosystem in the region.

He noted that SSI is well-positioned to contribute significantly to the Khelo India mission.

During the visit, he also saw off the school's U-17 and U-15 football teams, winners of the Zonal Championship, as they left for Sainik School Kodagu for the national-level competition.

He wished the cadets success.

Welcoming the proposal, Col A Rajiv said the Centre of Excellence would enhance cadet development and help identify and nurture sporting talent from across Manipur.
