Memorial event honours General Longjam Roma

A memorial event in honour of General Longjam Roma Singh was held today at Keishamthong Longjam Leirak.
General Longjam Roma Singh was a courageous soldier who fought bravely to secure the freedom of Manipur from the Burmese.
The event was organised by Longjam Roma Singh Memorial Trust, Keishamthong Longjam Leirak, Imphal.
The event was kicked off with an offering of floral tribute to the portrait of the General and was attended by former Minister Langpoklakpam Jayanta; Longjam Joychandra, president, Longjam Roma Singh Memorial Trust and Professor Paonam Gunindro, Vice Chancellor, Manipur University of Culture as the chief guest, functional president and guest of honour respectively.
Addressing the gathering, Longjam Joychandra described the general as a notable figure in Manipuri history and the "first guru" of Paona Brajabashi.
He was also a master in Thang-Ta.
He played a crucial role during the Seven Years Devastation and the establishment of Manipur Levy at Cachar during the reign of Maharaj Gambhir Singh, he added.
