Handloom & Textiles Dept targets 400 new GI users in Manipur

Imphal, July 22 2026: The Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles, Manipur has set a target to enroll 400 new GI users (authorized users) for the State's GI-tagged handloom and handicraft products, said Deputy Director (Handloom) Thokchom Basanta.

He was speaking at an "Awareness Programme on Government Schemes and Initiatives for Handloom & Handicrafts Sector and Distribution of Looms & Accessories under Heingang, Kshetrigao CDP and Imphal East Mega Handloom Cluster" held today at Nongchup Sintha Kanglup (NSK) Community Hall, Wangkhei Keithel Ashanbi.

The programme was organised by the District Handlooms and Textiles, Imphal East.

Basanta urged weavers and artisans to enroll as GI users to avail benefits and to use GI-tagged motifs in new products to improve marketability and boost the State's economy.

He said anyone with a Weaver ID or Pehchan Card and Aadhaar can register as a GI user at the Directorate or District Textile offices.

He added that at Bharat Tex 2026 in Delhi, GI-tagged products from Manipur drew strong interest from national and international buyers, fetching orders and opening scope for new product development.
