Thokchom Manimacha remembered

The 15th death anniversary of the late renowned Nat Sanskritan singer Thokchom Manimacha was observed today at Nungshikon Park in Chana, Imphal East district.
The memorial programme, jointly organised by Thokchom Manimacha's family members and the Chana Lukhoi Art Centre, saw a significant turnout of social workers and art enthusiasts.
Dignitaries present included social worker RK Dhanapati as chief guest, Chana Lukhoi Art Centre chairperson Chana Lembi as president, and Khaidem ongbi Punimashi, advisor of Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi, as guest of honour.
The ceremony commenced with traditional rituals and the offering of flowers and garlands to the portrait of Late Thokchom Manimacha.
A highlight of the event was a patriotic song presented by P Rajendro.
Speakers at the function paid rich tributes to Thokchom Manimacha, highlighting her immense contribution to Manipuri society and culture.
She was specifically lauded for her courage in breaking the social taboo that prevented women from singing within the mandop (temple precinct) .
Orators noted that had Manimacha not pioneered this change, Meitei women might still be unable to perform in such traditional spaces.
Throughout her life, Manimacha received numerous awards and performed extensively across India and even in the United States.
Speakers emphasized that her contributions and legacy should be remembered by current and future generations.
