Imphal, March 18 2026:
The Manipur State Council, Communist Party of India (MSC/CPI) has appealed to the Government to provide immediate relief to residents of Kangmong, Heigrujam, Awangjiri, and Moidangpok villages who have been severely affected by heavy rain and hailstorms on the intervening night of March 16 & 17.A CPI team, led by the Koijam Local Council, investigated the damage and found that thousands of granaries and various standings crops, including paddy, potato, cabbage, and strawberry plants, were destroyed by the unseasonal weather.
In a release, MSC/CPI highlighted the plight of poor families whose homes were damaged, forcing some to live in makeshift shelters within their tin-roofed houses as they could not afford repairs.
The CPI noted that these villages in Imphal West district are remote and lack development, making the agricultural losses particularly devastating for the predominantly farming communities.
The party urged the Government to provide adequate compensation to the affected families and farmers.
