CAU conducts 'Hawaijar' production training for IDPs

Imphal, March 16 2026:
The Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal under the All India Coordinated Research Project on Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (AICRP on PHET), organised an entrepreneurship development and hands-on training programme on fermented soybean (Hawaijar) production at Lamboikhongnangkhong, Imphal West district today.
The initiative was specifically designed for internally displaced persons (IDPs) currently residing at the Lamboikhongnangkhong relief camp.

The programme is part of the AICRP on PHET's ongoing extension efforts aimed at fostering livelihood generation opportunities across different parts of Manipur.
During the event, Dr Thangjam Anand Singh, Senior Scientist at CAU Imphal, emphasized the significant potential of Hawaijar production as a sustainable livelihood activity.
He highlighted its suitability for women entrepreneurs looking to generate income through home-based enterprises.
Dr Anand noted the widespread appreciation for Manipur-produced Hawaijar due to its distinctive flavour and quality.
He added that the growing regional demand presents promising opportunities for small-scale food processing industries.
He further assured continued support from CAU to people in relief camps through skill-based training and follow-up technical guidance to promote livelihood opportunities.
Another resource person, Dr Heisnam Nandita Devi, Senior Scientist at CAU, explained the process of preparing value-added products like pickles and other fermented food items from Hawaijar.
She stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene and proper fermentation techniques for quality production.
Approximately 50 participants attended the training programme, which included a live demonstration on practical Hawaijar preparation techniques conducted by Sanasam Menthoibi Devi, allowing attendees to gain hands-on experience.
