Imphal, May 15 2026:
Residents and Meira Paibis from villages near Nongmaiching forest range staged a protest at Leimaching foothills on Friday, alleging large-scale earth cutting is destroying the hill and threatening the ecosystem.
Organised by the Kshetrigao Nupi Lamjing Lup and local Meira Paibis, protesters carried placards reading "Save Leimaching Save Environment to Protect Ecosystem" and demanded that the Government immediately halt excavation.
Lup secretary Pangambam Anita said that while people are campaigning to protect the environment, unregulated earth cutting at Leimaching is unfortunate.

She questioned how hill cutting began now when no such activity occurred during last year's heavy rains, and asked if the Government had granted permission.
"Under what norms is earth being cut?" she asked.
Anita said villagers have long protected the hill and will not allow anyone to destroy it.
Even if soil is needed for development works, it should be taken from permitted sites, not from hills that locals have conserved.
She added that memorandums have been submitted to the Chief Minister and Imphal East DC seeking intervention.
Janu Begam, who joined the protest, urged authorities to disclose who authorised the cutting and revoke any permission given.
Wakha Women Development Association secretary Lousambam Baleshwori said locals heard the hill's dag number changed from 39 to 40 and sought clarification, demanding officials stop the excavation.
Protesters warned that Leimaching may soon be unrecognisable as a hill if cutting continues, stressing that hills are vital for clean air and climate balance.
