Imphal, September 13 2025: Khumi Tonsing Burton, MBE has become the first from Manipur to be elected as the Councillor of Cheshire East Council in the United Kingdom.

Burton, who has lived in the Lacey Green Ward for nearly 50 years, was bom in Imphal, Manipur, and is the daughter of late TC Tiankham, the first elected Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1948 .

Belonging to the Paite community, she is believed to be the first person from Manipur - and possibly from the entire North East India, to be elected to a public office in the UK .

Burton was elected as the Councillor of the Cheshire East Council after the Conservative's decisive win in the by-election held on Thursday.

In January 2024, she was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the King's New Year Honours List for her contributions to Greater Manchester, Cheshire, and military charities.
