'If youths turn away from Nat Sankirtan, society will lose its identity': Karam Shyam

Imphal, September 09 2026: Langthabal AC MLA Karam Shyam has said that if the younger generation turns away from Nat Sankirtan, which has given recognition to Manipur across the world, the identity of the society will gradually fade.

He was speaking at a function held today at Chajing organised by Guru Natek Meitei Pung Research Institute to conclude a one-month workshop on 'Meitei Pung Cholom' and to release a new production.

The programme was organised in connection with the death anniversary of renowned Meitei Pung exponent Guru Pukhrambam Natek and under the CMAT scheme of the Art & Culture Department.

The MLA said society should encourage those who strive to preserve and promote the beautiful tradition and form of Nat Sankirtan left by the elders.

Stating that developed countries in the world today have progressed by preserving their ancient art and traditions, he said Manipur's culture is not just about living together but is a very beautiful culture which is respected by people across the world.

He said late Guru Natek is a well-known personality in the field of Meitei Pung who worked hard to promote Nat Sankirtan during his lifetime and his contributions should not be forgotten by the present generation.

which is inscribed in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, showcases not only Pung and singing but also ancient practices, discipline and traditional attire of the society.

He assured to extend all possible support to take the art form to a higher level by following the path of gurus who worked to promote Nat Sankirtan.

It may be mentioned that Guru Pukhrambam Natek, who worked for over 60 years to promote Meitei Pung, passed away in 2004 at the age of 82 at his residence at Chajing Chingkhong Leikai due to illness.
