Orientation programme held on 'Senior Citizens Act'

An orientation programme on the "Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and Manipur Rules, 2023" was held today at the Panchayat Bhavan, DC Office Complex, Imphal East.
The programme was organised by the District Administration Imphal East in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Office, Imphal East.
The programme was graced by dignitaries, including RK Dayananda, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Imphal East; RK Nimai, Member, District Committee of Senior Citizens, Imphal East; Prof Rajkumar Lenin Singh, former Head, Department of Psychiatry, RIMS, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Dayananda highlighted that the purpose of the orientation was to educate parents and senior citizens (above 60 years of age) within the district about the provisions of the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and Manipur Rules, 2023 .
He asserted that the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, reinforced in Manipur by the 2023 Rules, mandates children/relatives to provide for the maintenance of parents and senior citizens.
"According to Section 2 of the Act, children/ heirs are required to provide maintenance for their parents aged 60 and above", he added.
He also mentioned that a Tribunal, often led by the SDO/ADM, handles these quasi-judicial proceedings, with a maximum monthly maintenance cap of Rs 10,000, RK Dayananda also announced that if children fail to properly care for their parents, applications can now be submitted to the concerned district officials.
