Imphal, October 03 2025:
The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has claimed that the recent eviction drive at Moibung Khunou in Sekmai Constituency, which involved the demolition of public facilities like a well, toilet, crematorium, and community hall in wee hours was politically motivated.
A team of MPCC members led by its president Keisham Meghachandra, inspected the evicted sites at Moibung Khunou today.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines, Meghachandra emphasized that the authorities should rebuild the destroyed facilities, considering the hardships faced by the locals due to the eviction.
Asserting that the demolished structures were not private properties, the Congress leader added that conducting the eviction drive based on a 1960 survey report, citing encroachment of the Hundung River, is baseless.
Meghachandra stated that there is sufficient space, approximately 200 feet, available for authorities to dredge the river.
He went on to state that the structures which were demolished were erected after taking due approval from the authorities.
Questioning the purpose of demolishing the public properties, he added that the authorities carrying out the evicition drive in wee hours was politically motivated even though there is President's Rule in Manipur.
He demanded that higher authorities conduct an inquiry into the incident, questioning the rationale behind demolishing structures that had been allegedly approved by the former Deputy Commissioner.
