Naoriya Phulo birth anniversary observed, public help sought for memorial complex

Imphal, September 03 2026: Meetei Marup, Meetei Leipak has appealed to the public to extend help to complete the statues of Laininghal Naoriya Phulo and three of his associates being constructed at Meetei Shanglen, Thambalkhong.

The appeal was made by its secretary general Angomcha Seram Gojendro during the observance of the 138th birth anniversary of Laininghal Naoriya Phulo held today at Meetei Shanglen, Wangkei Thambalkhong.

The observance began with hoisting of the Meetei Leipak flag and floral tribute to the portrait of Naoriya Phulo.

Gojendro said statues of Naoriya Phulo and his companions Pukhrambam Surchand, Pukhrambam Ibomcha and Takhellambam Bokul are being constructed to develop the site as Naoriya Phulo Memorial Complex to inspire future generations about his ideals and Meetei society.

He said the construction is nearing completion but has stalled due to financial constraints.

He said the organisation aims to unveil the statues on the '15th of Mera' and appealed to those who love and protect Meetei religion to extend financial and physical support.

Meanwhile, Amai Piba Apun Lup (APAL), Apokpa Marup Pungdongbam Mayai Loishang and Meetei Marup jointly observed the birth anniversary at Nongpokningthou Panthoibi Laibung, Pungdongbam.

Floral tributes were paid to Naoriya Phulo.

Speaking on the theme "No NRC No Census" at the function, Meitei Marup president Tongbram Gulamjat said NRC must be conducted before Census, otherwise Meeteis will face extinction.

He said indigenous people are becoming minorities and conducting the census without identifying illegal immigrants will include outsiders as locals and alter the demography.

He demanded that the Government identify undetected villages settled by outsiders and bar illegal immigrants from voting and settling.
