'BAMBUSETUM' project launched to conserve bamboo species

Imphal, April 02 2026:
The Department of Life Sciences (Botany), Manipur University, inaugurated the "BAMBUSETUM" project on Thursday evening near Kangshang on the university campus.
The initiative was launched under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.
The primary goal of the project is to assess the extinction threat faced by blooming bamboo species within the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot of Manipur and introduce scientific interventions for their conservation.
The inaugural function was graced by Prof N Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor of MU, who formally inaugurated the project.
Prof N Mohilal Meitei, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, and other university professors were also in attendance.
At the event, Prof Lokendra extended his appreciation for the initiative, emphasizing the significant role bamboo resources play in both the region's economic development and as a nutritional food source.
