CM unveils statue of Haipou Jadonang

Imphal, August 29 2015 : Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi unveiled a 9 ft tall bronze statue of Manipur freedom fighter Haipou Jadonang here on Saturday on the occasion of his 84th death anniversary at Haipou Jadonang Park, Keishampat here.

Graced by Chief Minister O Ibobi and Deputy CM Gaikhangam as chief guest and president, the programme was organised by Haipou Jadonang Statue and Park Development Committee, Manipur.

As a part of the commemorative function, Chief Minister led the candle lighting and floral tribute session followed by a two-minute silence observation for the "departed soul" and in memory of the sacrifices made by Haipou Jadonang.

A book entitled 'A Brief Biography of Haipou Jadonang' was also released by Organising Committee of Haipou Jadonang Statue and Park Development Committee at the event.

Chief Minister O Ibobi while addressing the gathering said that story of Haipou Jadonang is an endless subject since his story lives on while people have been observing his death anniversary to recall his great sacrifices for the sovereignty of Manipur.

Government has already urged the Ministry of Human Resource Development to include the life history of Haipou Jadonang in the syllabus of text books from class I to X, O Ibobi said.

The Chief Minister added that Jadonang Memorial Hall being built at his native village Tamenglong district will be completed soon with allocation of necessary fund from the Government.

The Government will also consider the feasibility of expanding the existing land of Haipou Jadonang Park at Keishampat, Imphal, he assured.

The CM further assured that a statue of freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu will also be erected in Imphal.

For this purpose, a suitable location will be identified shortly and even a Library and a Museum may also be constructed in memory and recognition of the sacrifices made by the freedom fighter.

Deputy CM Gaikhangam who spoke on the vision and efforts of Haipou Jadonang stated that like the crusade of the freedom fighters for attaining freedom from the British, the people of Manipur regardless of community, tribe and religion must live in harmony.

Describing Haipou Jadonang as an individual who campaigned courageously to protect indigenous people from foreign rulers, the Deputy Chief Minister affirmed that Manipur Government will never relent from its objective of protecting the territorial and emotional integrity of the State.

The function was also attended by Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam, RD & PR Minister Francis Ngajokpa, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, Vice Chairman HAC Z Kikhonbou Newmai, Deputy Speaker MK Preshow, Parliamentary Secretary for TA & Hills Victor Keishing, MLAs T Mangibabu, Janghemlung Panmei, K Ranjit Singh, former MLA Dr Kh Loken, President ZU (AMN) Amu Kahmei and Deputy Mayur IMC Ph Thambaljao Phaomei as guests of honour.

Civil society leaders and people from all walks of life also attended the function.
