11 shops gutted, goods worth Rs 50 lac destroyed

At least 11 shops have been reduced to cinders by a devastating inferno that broke out at Irilbung Keithel, Imphal East district at around 1.30 am today.
According to information culled from the spot, the inferno broke out from a tea stall and it is suspected that the fire originated from either an unattended furnace or electric short circuit.
Together with the tea stall, there was a row of shops, all built with wood on the bank of Iril river.
Soon after the fire broke out, two LPG cylinders exploded in quick succession and it added more ferocity to the raging inferno.

In the next moment, the inferno spread to the surrounding structures.
Altogether five grocery shops, three tea stalls, one pan kiosk, one fish stall and one vegetable stall were completely reduced to cinders by the inferno.
However, people managed to protect around three shops.
Of the five grocery shops destroyed by the inferno, two were used as shops cum dwelling houses.
Altogether four fire tenders were pressed into service and the Manipur Fire Services team was able to douse off the inferno at around 2.30 am.
Although the exact monetary value is not known yet, it is estimated that goods worth more than Rs 50 lakh have been destroyed by the inferno.
The victims who houses and shops have been destroyed are Pangambam Tomba (tea stall), Thokchom Basanta (grocery), Y Kula (grocery), Konsam Ibomcha (grocery), Thokchom Sorojini (tea stall), Sanasam (O) Achoubi (grocery) and Keisham (O) Thoibi (vegetable stall).
All of them belong to Irilbung Machahal.
Basanta and Ibomcha were using up their shops as dwelling houses.
Shops run by Yumlembam Jamini of Keirao Bitra Awang Leikai, Irengbam Sakcha of Bamon Kampu Mayai Leikai, Khamnam Chaibi of Irilbung Kalika and Ningthoujam Romesh of Keirao Bitra Awang Leikai were also reduced to cinders.
