Manipur College hosts cervical cancer awareness programme

A 1-Day Cervical Cancer Awareness Programme was successfully conducted today at Manipur College, Singjamei.
The programme was jointly organised by the Hospital Based Cancer Registry (HBCR) and Population Based Cancer Registry (PBCR), Department of Pathology, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, in collaboration with the NSS Units I, II and III of Manipur College, said a release issued by RIMS.
The programme was graced by dignitaries, including Dr Sorokhaibam Babina, Professor, Department of Pathology, RIMS, Imphal and Principal Investigator, HBCR, ICMR-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (NCDIR), Bengaluru; Prof Aribam Devidas Sharma, Principal, Manipur College, Imphal; Dr Ratan Konjengbam, Professor, Department of Pathology, RIMS, Imphal and Co-Principal Investigator, HBCR, ICMR-NCDIR, Bengaluru; and Dr P Birchandra Singh, ex-Programme Officer, NSS, Manipur College, Imphal.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Babina highlighted the growing burden of cancer in the country, with special emphasis on cervical cancer as one of the most preventable malignancies among women.
She also stressed the importance of early detection, regular screening, HPV vaccination, and community awareness, and encouraged students to act as ambassadors of health awareness within society.
During the programme, experts delivered comprehensive lectures on the overview of cancer and preventive measures for cervical cancer, underscoring the role of lifestyle modification, timely screening, and public education in reducing cancer-related morbidity and mortality.
The programme witnessed active participation from students, faculty members, and NSS volunteers.
The initiative aimed to enhance awareness and promote preventive practices against cervical cancer, thereby contributing to improved public health outcomes.
