Zero Waste Kakching continues weekly plastic cleanup drive

Kakching, July 19 2026: Continuing its campaign for a cleaner, healthier and waste-free environment, Zero Waste Kakching on Sunday, organised its 13th weekly plastic waste clean-up drive, collecting discarded plastic bottles and other non-biode-gradable waste from the main irrigation canal passing through Louyai Lambi in Kakching.

The initiative, undertaken every Sunday by the students' and youths' organisation, aims to reduce the harmful impact of non-biodegradable waste, particularly plastics, and promote a clean, healthy and waste-free society.

Speaking during the drive, senior member of Zero Waste Kakching, Kshetrimayum Meghachandra, said the adverse effects of plastic waste on human society and the environment are widely known, yet the indiscriminate use and disposal of plastic materials continue unabated.

He appealed to pedestrians, motorists and farmers not to throw plastic bottles and other waste along roadsides, canals and water bodies.

He also urged residents living along the canal, particularly those in Tuismi, Pallel and Leimangai Chingjil, to refrain from dumping household and plastic waste into the waterway.

Meghachandra further appealed to the Kakching Municipal Council to install plastic bottle banks and waste bins across its jurisdiction to facilitate proper waste disposal and help tackle the growing problem of plastic pollution.
