Thoubal, December 17 2025:
The Nongpok Sayang Apuna Lup (NSAL) has strongly condemned the armed firing and bombing allegedly carried out by armed Kuki assailants on Tuesday night, terming the incidents a serious setback to the ongoing peace efforts in the State.
The condemnation was voiced by NSAL president Ananda Laishram during a meeting of the organisation held at the Social and Economic Development Organisation (SEDO) office at Yairipok Keithel.
The gathering unanimously condemned the armed firing, alleging that Meitei villagers were once again targeted.
The organisation described such acts as a direct threat to peace and harmony in the State.
Addressing the meeting, Laishram questioned the effectiveness of the peace and development initiatives undertaken so far, and asked what concrete steps the Governor has taken to restore peace and normalcy.
He stated that if assurances given to the public cannot be fulfilled, clarity and accountability must be ensured.
Ananda also strongly refuted a press statement issued by the Kuki-Zo Council regarding the firing incident, stating that peace and resettlement initiatives should not be hindered by any community.
He alleged that despite the Governor's appeal for the submission of arms and ammunition from the valley areas to restore normalcy, firing from the Kuki side at Torbung on the previous day raised serious questions about the intent behind such peace initiatives.
He further questioned that claim of peace development when even free movement along the National Highway has not been ensured.
Expressing concern over the silence of security forces, Ananda said their role is to protect civilians and maintain law and order.
He alleged that limiting operations to the valley while failing to act decisively in the hills could have dangerous consequences.
Appealing to all communities in the State, Ananda called for a united condemnation of armed violence, stressing that lasting peace lies in the hands of the people and requires collective responsibility.
