Imphal, July 16 2021:
In view of the government's announcement of imposing total curfew from July 18, Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS) has urged all for strict adherence to the same, adding that there is no other effective means to stop the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement, KIMACS president N Ajit-kumar said that the previous lockdowns/ curfews imposed by the government have been ineffective in curbing the spread of the pandemic owing to the people's lax attitude in adhering to the protocols, leading to spike in positive cases till date.
Additionally, rumours about the inefficacy of the vaccine have also been rampant.
National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration for Covid-19 has already reported 3,09,000 Covid deaths in the second wave, while various countries are already battling the third wave of the pandemic.
"Although the lockdowns/curfews have been taxing on the poor particularly the daily wage earners, the Covid-19 violators have been mainly people from wealthy class as witnessed from reports of traffic accidents, congestions even during the curfew period.
It is known by everybody that for the wealthy, the government offices are always opened but for the poor, the doors remain closed", he added.
The president continued: "Even the roster system of opening shops is flawed as many shops stealthily operate.
Liquor vendors continue to stay open as if they have the international permit for doing so like pharmacies".
Meanwhile, due to closure of schools and other educational institutions, students are increasingly falling into the ravines of drugs, revelries and other reckless behaviours, completely ignoring the dangers of the pandemic and contributing in its spread instead.
This is alarming, as they are the future of the state, he said.
Stressing the need for strict enforcement of the total curfew from July 18, Ajitkumar urged the government to fully utilise the army, paramilitary and state security forces and take strict action so as to prevent spread of the virus, especially the highly transmissible Delta variant.
